The critical role of respirators in workplaces characterized by dust, smoke, or vapors cannot be emphasized enough. Let’s delve into an exploration of the importance of respiratory protection.

Respirator Overview:

Respirators serve as essential breathing protection against various harmful agents found in workplaces, including dust, particulate matter, gases, sprays, or volatile chemicals. At times, respirators are even worn in extreme temperatures. Achieving complete respiratory compliance is imperative for effective protection against hazardous airborne agents, and all respirators must be certified by NIOSH.

There exist two primary types of respirators: air-purifying and air-supplying.

Air-purifying:

  • This category of respirators eliminates contaminants from the air through particulate filters, cartridges, or canisters connected to a facepiece.
  • Cartridges and canisters contain materials specifically designed to eliminate gases or vapors, and sometimes both are utilized to address multiple contaminants.

Air-supplying:

  • Air-supplying respirators furnish the wearer with a separate air supply, distinct from the contaminated air.
  • This category includes self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), where the worker carries their air supply while an airline respirator hose connects to the air source from a distance away—a type often utilized by firefighters.

OSHA Regulations:

Adherence to stringent OSHA requirements is mandatory for all respirator wearers, encompassing aspects such as use, fit, and maintenance. Here are examples of OSHA regulations with which employers must comply:

  • Providing a medical examination to assess an employee’s ability to use a respirator before fit testing or use.
  • Conducting a qualitative fit test (QLFT) or quantitative fit test (QNFT) for those requiring negative or positive pressure tight-fitting facepiece respirators.
  • Ensuring the correct usage of the selected respirator.
  • Regularly maintaining respirators and ensuring proper care.
  • Offering training and educational programs for users.
  • Conducting evaluations and maintaining accurate recordkeeping.
